At the Winter X Games at Buttermilk Mountain, Aspen on Saturday, Oakley’s Helene Olafsen won silver in the final of women’s snowboard cross, or Snowboarder X. A freestyle discipline in which four or more racers speed down a course while negotiating bumps, berms, jumps and rollers, snowboard cross often leads to crashes.

There were several crashes during semifinal heats Saturday, but none in the women’s final in which Jacobellis and Helene Olafsen shot out ahead of the field from the starting gate.

The reigning world champion, Olafsen is ranked No. 3 in the World Cup standings this season. She and Jacobellis changed leads three times. But Jacobellis grabbed the lead for good in a rhythm section that caused several spectacular crashes earlier in the day.
