Victory At Last: 17-Year-Old Mikaela Shiffrin Earns First Audi FIS Alpine World Cup Victory

It’s been much anticipated and young Mikaela Shiffrin delivered, just in time for the holidays. The budding Oakley alpine ski racing star secured her first ever Audi FIS Alpine World Cup victory this Thursday in Are, Sweden. The American phenom shot to the top of the podium in the slalom competition, becoming the third-youngest American to win a World Cup race.

Shiffrin is coming off an already impressive 2012 season in which she has podiumed twice. The Oakley standout has competed in 14 career slalom starts and secured seven top-10 finishes, including two third place finishes and her recent win. As a result of her triumph, Shiffrin now leads the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup slalom standings by 22 points over Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch. She is 11th in the overall season standings.

Her first run in Sweden left her in second place, only 0.15 seconds behind the hometown skier, Frida Hansdotter. Shiffrin overcame the Swede in her second run however, topping her by 0.29 seconds. With her mother and many anxious supporters there to witness it, Shiffrin was overcome with joy after her win.

“Having these accomplishments, making top 30 in GS, winning a slalom (Thursday), it just feels like I’m where I belong and I’m where I want to be and where I need to be,” Shiffrin said. “No matter what happens off the hill, when I’m on the hill and I’m skiing like that, I feel like I’m at home.”

Congratulations to Mikaela on her history making accomplishment and best of luck in the rest of the season. We have no doubt that there will be many repeat performances in the near future and ski fans should get used to seeing Shiffrin on top of the podium.
