Bio
Emily Batty grew up one of four children on a farm in Ontario, Canada. All four have gone on to successful cycling careers. Emily busted on to the National and World seen in 2007 when she finished 1st at the Canadian National Mountain Bike Championships, and 1st overall in the Canada Cup Series. A top 10 finish at the 2008 U23 World Championships confirmed that she is one of the fastest rising stars in the sport.
Emily is the 2009 Pan Am U23 Champion. 4th in the XC at UC Cup #1 in Fontana, CA. 1st in the Short Track at Sea Otter Classic. 10th and 13th in World Cups 2&3;and 1st U23 in both. 1st at Canada Cup round #1 in Baie Saint Paul.

Can you call out a single career highlight and why?
10th at Offenburg World Cup with 8th place only meters in front. It was my first year doing most of the European world cups.

Who makes you laugh?
Everyone, I love to laugh.

If I had a younger sister, one piece of life advice I would give her is:
I do, and “Learn, Laugh, Love” is the greatest saying to live by. Always follow your instinct and to love what you do.

What is the story behind the pearl necklace and never wearing gloves?
My pearl necklace I discovered in my mom’s jewelry box when I was 13 and have worn it ever since. She’s shown me pictures of her wearing it when she was a teenager. And never wearing gloves? I find gloves hot and so uncomfortable.

Goals for the future:
In the near future, I would love to decorate my website with the rainbow stripes, and eventually Olympic rings. I’m going all the way!

How did you start Mountain Bike riding? How old were you?
I started with being my two older brothers' “feeders” at the races. Then I begged my parents to let me go with the guys on their night rides. 1999 was my first year racing. I would have been 11.

If you were not a pro mountain bike rider, you would be?
A wedding dress designer, high school gym teacher, or someone who goes around to schools and get more kids involved with mountain biking.

What is the biggest obstacle you had to face?
Watching so many talented athletes have to retire because of funding issues.

Where is your favorite place to ride?
3Roxs-Durham Forest… The place I learned to ride, oh the memories.

At this level, what is something unique that you do in your training to improve your riding?
I think it’s pretty unique having someone to train with every single day (now with my boyfriend/coach).

Wheelies on our free ride bikes and getting in the habit of twittering haha.
