The stakes are always high at X Games. At this event above all other, the Action Sports community is on lookout for the newest tricks from the biggest names, and even, from those names who aren’t yet as familiar. The next big thing is always just a run away.

A blizzard swept through Tignes, France on the first day of competition at Euro X Games, and what followed was a flurry of world-class competition. Three days of action in the Superpipe, on the Slopestyle course and on the Internet resulted in five medals for Oakley skiers, and 11 overall for Oakley athletes. While there were plenty of great stories throughout the week, the achievement by Kaya Turski stood out from the rest. For the fourth consecutive year in Tignes, Turski was untouchable in Slopestyle, winning another Gold for the first four-peat in Euro X history. The win was a bit of redemption for Turski, who had to settle for Silver in Aspen in January behind young Norwegian skier Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen.

The unpredictability of Winter X Games is part of the event’s appeal. New tricks, new names, upsets, surprises and general stimuli overload. The crowds, the tricks, the crashes, the variables, it all adds to the excitement. Those elements, along with the constant commitment to innovation at almost every level. In the weeks and months leading up to Winter X in Aspen, Colo., Henrik Harlaut had stayed away from anything resembling a traditional training program. Instead, the 21-year-old Swede had been touring the East Coast, skiing icy slopes as part of the Inspired Demo Tour. Small mountains with the occasional rail and maybe a small jump or two. Nothing close to what’d he encounter in Big Air and Slopestyle with the eyes of the world watching.
