    They’re called heavy favorites for a reason. Over the years, especially in those recent, Switzerland’s Nino Schurter and France’s Julie Bresset have proven why they are two of the most dominant riders in UCI Cross Country Mountain Biking. Schurter entered Saturday’s Men’s Elite race as the defending UCI MTB World Champion, 2012 London Olympic silver medalist, two time World Champion, three-time World Cup Overall Winner. To say he was expected to be one of the main contenders would be the understatement of the year. Bresset was also in South Africa as the reigning World Champion, but also the 2012 London Olympic Champion. Both riders would look to put the pace on their respective fields, and that they did.

    The ladies of Downhill Mountain Bike need look no further than young Rachel Atherton for the girl to beat at the 2013 World Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The 25-year-old British rider has made a habit of constant improvement throughout her career. Atherton was crowned the World Champion in 2008 along with the World Cup Overall Champion that same year, all while racking up four World Cup wins.

    It’s been an admittedly tough stretch for Australia’s shining tennis star, Sam Stosur since she stunned the world in 2011, topping Serena Williams in the final of the US Open. Since her win in New York, Stosur had failed to secure another singles title, until Sunday. The 29-year-old entered the Southern California Open in Carlsbad as a wild card and fought her way to the event title, beating Victoria Azarenka 6-2 6-3 in Sunday’s final.
