For Nikki Van Dijk, qualification for the ASP Women’s World Tour wasn’t a matter of if, but when. In 2012, she was still in school and dabbling in the Qualifying Series. She was a wildcard into a WCT even hosted by her primary sponsor. At the end of the year, without fully committing herself, she found herself just three spots outside the bubble.
Affectionately referred to in the industry as “Xena,” after the warrior princess character, Switzerland’s Caroline Steffen is tough; as her nickname suggests. The Swiss Miss proved so Down Under this weekend, claiming the Asia Pacific Ironman Championship in Melbourne over some of the best triathletes in the women’s field.
American alpine ski phenom Mikaela Shiffrin added another notch to her belt this weekend as she secured the overall 2014 Audi FIS Alpine Slalom World Cup title with a twelfth place finish in Lenserheide, Switzerland. Finishing what was undoubtedly her best season ever on a high, Shiffrin wracked up all the points she needed to claim the overall slalom season title, just a month after she became the youngest ever woman to win the Olympic gold medal in the same event.
