Oakley Wakeboard Team Introduces the New Blade Boardshort to the Southeast
With a dominating 2012 season for the Oakley Wake program behind them, it was time to take advantage of the off-season and invite Florida’s top accounts to spend the afternoon with the team in Orlando, Fla. The Square O Sessions program began in early 2010 with a simple idea: we wanted to utilize our top accounts and give them some product knowledge and time on the water with our professional riders. It has evolved over the years and really grown into a both a fun and educational event.
The recent release of the Oakley Blade boardshort has made a lot of noise in the surf industry, and Oakley wanted to make sure the Wake scene was aware of the innovative boardshort as well.
With Orlando being the home-base and epicenter of wakeboarding, we set out to have the event at the Projects Wakeboard Camp in Orlando, Fla. The Projects has been one of the most progressive lakes in the sport of wakeboarding for the last 15 years. With countless contests, photo and video shoots, free riding and some of the most progressive rails over the years on site, we couldn’t have picked a better place. Now being run by Shaun Murray and Travis Moye of the Boarding School, the lake is equipped with a Brand new Nautique 230 and Mastercraft XStar. Also on site is a Sesitec 2.0 and full custom rail park operated by ski.
Oakley invited some of the top local and core accounts out to the Projects wake camp to have some fun, ride, get some product knowledge, as well as compete in a team-oriented contest. Employees from Quiet Flight, The Curl, Sammy Duvall’s Watersports and Performance Ski & Surf were broken into teams with an Oakley Wake athlete as captain. The captains took their team through three different stages of the event where points could be earned: wakeboarding behind the boat, riding the cable system, and a quiz on Oakley product knowledge. In the end, the team with the highest total from all three stages won a killer Oakley prize pack, featuring a brand new Liquid Force Harley 2013 wakeboard. Although only one team won, every participant got a pair of Oakley’s Blade boardshorts to ride in and a pair of Oakley sunglasses. For shop employees who had never ridden before, it was a once in a lifetime chance to learn from the best in the business. In the end, Performance Ski & Surf not only shined in the riding phase (as expected), but also showed that they were up to par with their Oakley product knowledge and took the win.
Following the contest was a BBQ with a DJ playing some tunes. Awards were given for Best Crash, Best First Ride, Best Trick, and Biggest Air. Overall it was a great event and we would like to give a special thanks to everyone involved and all the Oakley Wake athletes who came out support the event and have some fun.
