Killer Start: Harley Clifford Opens Season with Wake Games Victory, Amber Wing Takes Women’s Win
How do you know Oakley’s poised for a monster season?
Claiming bold victories in both the Men’s and Women’s Wakeboard contests at the Wake Games in Orlando is a pretty damn good sign.
Oakley’s young phenom Harley Clifford, who hauled in a boatload of recognition and hardware last season, came out of the gates on fire this year as he grabbed a resounding win in the Men’s Pro Division following a solid first run in the finals – all in his new technologically advanced boardshorts, the Blade 2. Fellow Aussie and Oakley Team Rider Amber Wing snatched her own victory in the Women’s Pro Division to place the Big O atop the field.
If that wasn’t enough, Harley went home with an extra $1,000 in his pocket after taking the Rockstar Energy Drink Double Up Contest – securing the check with a Melon Poke Heelside Frontside 900 as the best trick of the day.
But the two audacious Aussies weren’t the only two O riders gracing the awards stage. Top seeded Nicola Butler grabbed the third spot on the Women’s Wakeboard Podium while Oakley wakeskate shredder Danny Hampson took second in his respective contest.
Danny also found himself back up on stage, as his designated team for the week – “Team Malinoski,” made up of selected athletes that racked up points for team leader Rusty Malinoski (according to results) – emerged with the team title.
Meanwhile, Oakley’s onsite field marketing/sales team was kicking arse and taking names for the brand – as a full onsite display (typical of O during major events in the sport) made some major noise with the killer Surf/Wake collection for all to see. Spectators made their way through Oakley’s site where they checked out the latest in performance surf apparel, women’s swimwear, eyewear and more to get themselves pumped for the coming Summer.
With Oakley athletes owning the competition and standing atop the podiums in the latest, most stylish and most advanced Oakley gear – and the brand representing big time overall – the 2011 Wake Games were a clear success. The momentum is definitely rolling for Team Oakley as they charge the next stops on the Pro Tour.
