Coronation: Oakley’s Nicola Butler Crowned Queen of Wake and World Champion, Amber Wing Takes Second
Long live the Queen…of Wake.
Oakley ripper Nicola Butler was crowned the 2010 Queen of Wake after emerging from the WWA Wakeboard World Championships on top of the podium this past weekend in Orlando.
Nicola faced off against some of the top pro women in the World in a six-woman final for both the event title and deciding points toward the Queen of Wake series. Despite patches of heavy Florida rain and wind, Butler (top seed) threw down the most impressive run of the day, which included a transfer back lip onto the funbox, to win her second world title in three years.
“I didn’t ride my best, I had a couple of falls, but I was stoked about my transfer,” said Butler, rocking Oakley Correspondents on the podium for all to see. “It feels awesome to win. I had a bad year in 2009, so to come back this year and win Queen of Wake is like redemption.”
But she wasn’t the only Oakley rider to grace the podium. All season long, Nicola and fellow Oakley teammate Amber Wing dominated the top two spots at the majority of the contests this year. It was no different at Worlds. Amber charged through to the finals and took second place at the end of the day: Both in the World Championships and in the final Queen of Wake standing. Her solid performance ensured that Oakley owned the spotlight at the awards ceremony.
“It was good to finish at the Worlds one and two and it was great that we both threw down solid passes,” Wing said, also rocking Oakley shades on the podium. “For us to ride really well in the finals – it was awesome. We both transferred well, we both hit the A Frame well. Stood up two passes – and we both only had one fall.”
The dynamic Oakley duo – who ride together often and feed off each other to push the feminine side of the sport to new levels – definitely represented Oakley in grand fashion during the big weekend in Orlando. It was only fitting that Oakley’s overall presence at the event was just as grand.
With the contest announcer showing Oakley tons of love throughout the weekend and driving traffic to the massive Rolling O Lab activation site, die-hard fans and newly won admirers had the opportunity to check out Oakley product, learn about our patented technologies in the lab and get autographs from their favorite Oakley athletes during team signing sessions. Just an incredible overall Oakley experience to top off our two female phenoms’ triumph at the podium.
Congratulations to the very beautiful Nicola and Amber for an awesome season and an amazing finish. Stay tuned for an upcoming follow-up story on Oakley’s overall presence in Orlando during the World Championships.
