Wake Rockin’: Aaron Rathy Grabs Second Place at Sprawling Wakestock Festival
Peace, love and utter ‘rippage’…
The sprawling Wakestock Festival Weekend kicked into full gear in Ontario, Canada this past weekend…and it definitely went off. Even with the massive crowds, skateboarding, bands, bikinis, the onsite action sports expo and crazy parties raging, the star of the show was still the collection of the world’s top wakeboarders charging big time. Of those, Oakley’s Aaron Rathy definitely showed up the competition.
The O team star grabbed a solid second place at the Billabong Pro Wakeboard Championship, which saw a 16 man quarterfinal cut down to an eight-man semifinal. The wind picked up during the heats, making for tough riding conditions. But that didn’t stop anyone from throwing down solid runs. Plowing through were past Wakestock champs Aaron Rathy (defending), Phil Soven, Andrew Adkison, plus Trevor Hansen, Shawn Watson, Olivier Derome and Austin Hair.
The field was then chopped in half for the four man final comprised of the some of the biggest names in the sport: Phillip Soven, the WWA World Series overall points leader, Aaron Rathy, the defending Wakestock and World Champion, Bob Soven, the current points leader for the King of Wake and Andrew Adkison, a former two-time World Champ. Bob Soven was first off the dock and took advantage, as the wind seemed to drop a little for his ride. In the end, it was Bob who prevailed in the challenging conditions to earn his second ever, professional victory, just ahead of Aaron Rathy, Phil Soven (older brother) and Andrew Adkison.
“It’s always fun to go home and compete in Canada,” said Rathy, who’s enjoyed the home cooking with success the past few years. “Wakestock was my first pro contest that I entered in 2005. Going back now and being able to ride in front of the huge crowd with fans that absolutely love wakeboarding is the best. I can’t wait to head back to Wakestock next year.”
