Wakeboarding at the X Games

For the first time ever, wakeboarding will be at the center of all the action at this week’s X Games. World Sports & Marketing (producer of the Pro Tour) and ESPN have announced the debut of a new event for wakeboarding in 2006, the X Games Wake Pool Jam.

Scheduled for August 4-6 and taking place right in the middle of all the action at a main venue of the X Games – the Home Depot Center – the Wake Pool Jam brings together the world’s best wakeboarders in a unique event never seen before.

The Wake Pool Jam, presented by Oakley and sponsored by MasterCraft, features the world’s largest two-tier wake pool, featuring a 50-foot-long elevated start pool. It also has three rail options that descend to a 100-foot-long ground pool. The riders, towed by a high-speed winch, will also hold demos for the crowd over the four-day event.

"The ‘Wake Pool Jam’ format lets us showcase wakeboarding to the masses right at the Home Depot Center. It gives our sport the opportunity to be exposed in front of thousands of fans," said Sean Dishman, sponsorship director for World Sports & Marketing.

Top names competing include perennial X Games champion Danny Harf, who’s coming off his first-ever MasterCraft Pro Tour season championship in Reno, Nevada. Other riders include rising star Andrew Adkison and Canadian sensation Rusty Malinoski. Also adding to the flair of the event, Parks Bonifay will be one of the special on-site announcers.

Wakeskaters will be a part of the X Games for the first time. Six top skaters, including just-crowned Pro Tour champ Brian Grubb and the legend himself, Scott Byerly, will hit the pool.

"Oakley is proud to bring wakeboarding and wakeskating to the X Games at Home Depot Center. Like snowboarders, the wake riders are constantly evolving their sport to break the standard mold. And this event is a great step towards a bright future between wakeboarding and X Games," said Matty Swanson, Oakley wakeboard and snowboard sports marketing manager

The X Games is the definitive annual action-sports competition, featuring more than 150 of the world’s best athletes. In addition to wakeboarding, the X Games lineup includes BMX Freestyle, Moto X, Skateboard, Surfing and, new this year, Rally Car Racing. ESPN and ABC will provide 14 hours of live TV coverage this year, plus ESPN will air four late-night highlight programs.

Presenting sponsor Oakley is recognized as one of the most coveted brands in performance technology and sport. The icon is embraced by the global culture of competitors who define their own lifestyle – the world-class athletes who exceed the limits of possibility. Oakley’s 30-year legacy of invention has led to a diversified range of products including eyewear, apparel, accessories, watches, footwear and electronics.

Wake Pool Jam sponsor MasterCraft has been shaping the boating industry since 1968. More than three decades after the original MasterCraft made its debut, the company’s goal remains the same – to continue building the world’s best ski, wakeboard and luxury-performance powerboats, year after year. MasterCraft is the exclusive tow boat for the Pro Wakeboard Tour, as it has been since the tour’s wakeboarding events began in 1992.
