From Nick’s beginnings in the wakeskating world everyone has known that he was something special. With more natural talent and dedication to the sport then possibly anyone before him Nick has altered the face of wakeskating with groundbreaking moves that he does seemingly effortlessly. After winning Alliance Magazines Wakeskater of the year distinction as well as Move of the Year in 2007, also the 2008 Wake Awards Rider of the year. Nick has not slowed down on his tear through the wakeskating world. His consistency this year has placed him on top of the podium in the first two events of the Byerly Toe Jam Tour and his pention for big moves done right landed him the cover of Wakeboarding Magazine. His cool, quiet demeanor comes from his upbringing on Anna Maria island, where when he is not traveling you can find him hanging out living the island life. With salt water pumping through his viens and a smile always plastered on his face, this island boy is doing it right.
Q&A
- Who or what inspires your riding? Just about everything in life. Any motion that catches my eye can give me ideas on different ways to ride my wakeskate. And again, good surfing and skateboarding have given me so many different concepts to work with and build on, they are the main source of influence for me. The Cassette guys circa 03 laid the foundation for where wakeskating was to go and I’d like to think that I’m helping to keep it moving in the right direction.
- Outside of wakeskating what are your other influences? My understanding of the water comes from growing up surfing, but wakeskating really follows in the footsteps of skateboarding, adapted to a different medium.
- Favorite thing to ride behind? Any Sea-Doo on some glassy stretch of saltwater.
- What is your beverage of choice? Gatorade Lemon-Lime, classic
- Butter or glass? A mirror
- Have you ever been in love? I think so, I’m just waiting for her to come around.
- What is your favorite place that wakeskating has taken you? The Philippines was definitely the rowdiest, but I think Southern California really does it for me.
- If you could only ride in one place for the rest of your life where would it be? Anna Maria Island, FL
- How honestly did you get so tan? Most of my blood is Cherokee and I live on a sandy little island.
- If you could be an animal what would you be and why? Saltwater crocodile. Smooth and powerful, stylish and deadly.
- How do you feel on the dock before your run at a contest? Lately, really light-hearted. I used to worry about doing well and get really nervous. When I started telling myself that I didn’t care about contests anymore, it let off the pressure enough to really let me ride my best out there and show what can be done with a wakeskate.
- Who is your hero? My dad. He made people feel loved with the way he treated them and he took advantage of every day he had. He was the hardest-working man I’ve ever met and he had the most fun. Seriously the coolest guy ever.
- When was the last time you played truth or dare? Last winter. It was awesome. I ended up wearing only a bandana for the last half of it.
- Would you ever date a girl that was taller than you? I did in 8th grade and it was kind of awkward. True Love is wild though dude, so you never know.
- Most important thing in life is …? Doing what is going to make you happy. The content kind of happy, not the empty fleeting indulging kind.
- Best part of riding for Oakley? The Crew.
- What is your favorite color and why? One color is good, but two together always looks better. Sky blue and yellow-green always made me feel good.
- What Hollywood starlet would you most like to spend an afternoon with? Keira Knightly for sure.
- Worst trip you have ever been on? I don’t do drugs.
- Favorite Olympic sport? I always wanted to be good with a javelin.
- If you could go to any concert who would you see, past or present? The Beatles when they were just getting started and then again at their peak.
- If wakeskating became illegal what would you do? It’s pretty much illegal where I live, thanks again to the manatees, so you gotta keep it pirate style.
