Frederik Van Lierde, Mary Beth Ellis Smash Course Records To Win Ironman France

With the stunning background of the French Riviera, Ironman France is a spectacle of not only gorgeous landscape, but brilliant displays of athletic will. Belgian Frederik Van Lierde and American Mary Beth Ellis took full advantage of all Ironman France has to offer. The male and female winners in Nice each set course records, respectively, with Van Lierde smashing his own course record, which he set last year.

Van Lierde became the back-to-back champion (2012 and 2013) when he outlasted Bert Aernouts on the run course. Van Lierde had set out a pretty impressive lead on the swim and bike legs, however, Aernouts came out of T2 hammering on the run coming to within 2:35 at one point on the third of four laps on the marathon course. Ultimately, Van Lierde went on to win the race, with a new course record of 8:08:59, shattering the mark he set last year of 8:21:51. His impressive 2:42 marathon was just enough to hold off Aernouts, who ran an even quicker 2:37.

On the women’s side, it was all Mary Beth Ellis, all day long. The American came out of the water with the fastest swim (51:22) and was within the top ten overall at that time. Ellis put down a race record 5:11:40 bike to increase her lead to an unreachable mark. A 3:04:06 marathon was all she needed to claim the top spot on the podium in Nice. Even despite a small accident on the bike, leaving her with a few road rash marks, Ellis also set the course record with an overall winning time of 9:12:54.

Congratulations to both Oakley athletes, Van Lierde and Ellis, on their record days in Nice. Their performances were just as nice as the Mediterranean backdrop and superb weather in the South of France.
