Oakley Owns Podium at 25th Ironman New Zealand
The 25th Anniversary of the New Zealand Ironman was held in Taupo on Saturday and with light winds and the occasional shower, it provided ideal race conditions. Oakley athlete and Kiwi Cameron Brown came away with the victory in the mens race, while winning his 8th title and breaking his own race record (8:18:04). Gina Ferguson (Oakley) ended the six year reign of Jo Lawn(Oakley) at this race, beating her by nearly 5 minutes.
Athletes wore custom Radar, Flak Jacket & Enduring glasses for the race.
This was Oakley South Pacific’s first venture into Ironman distance triathlon and the timing was perfect. This year’s event celebrated 25 years of the New Zealand Ironman. That’s 25 years of pros, amateurs, and first timers travelling to New Zealand to try their hand at a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a 42km run (a marathon).
The week began on Monday March 2nd, with international competitors from over 35 countries arriving early. This is their time to relax, get over jet lag, and explore the beautiful city of Taupo. As the week progressed, the tension and nerves grew, and we found ourselves reassuring competitors that “everything’s done, all you need to do is race”.
For this event, we set up right at the entrance of the Official Merchandise Store (which is attached to the expo). This area is hub of activity. Competitors visit to register, converse, kill time, and most importantly, buy anything that shows they’ve achieved the unthinkable!
Triathletes love technology and knowledge, and we were there to satisfy. We found ourselves constantly explaining:
Where they could buy our products
That our frames are RX ready (most frequently asked)
What our Custom Program consists of
Why Polarized is better, and why it applies to more than just fishermen and sailors
That we do have Photochromatic lenses, how they work, and why they cost more
No event is complete without an Athlete Signing. We took advantage of a rare moment, and gathered our TOP 3 athletes together for a joint signing! ( Cameron Brown, Jo Lawn, and Torenzo Bozzone )
The focus for the stand this year was the NZ Ironman Edition Radar. What’s so special about them?? Etching isn’t available in the southern hemisphere, and the Positive Red Iridium Lens isn’t in the Custom Program so they can’t be bought!! To keep this special, we only created 75 pairs.
Of course we also featured standard Radar, Flak Jacket, Enduring, Thump Pro/O Rokr, and the Sport Specific Custom Program. The Custom Program proved to be a hit. With 450 NZ based competitors coming through, many of them were excited to find out that the program was live in NZ sport doors & the Oakley Store in Auckland.
To top it off, we showcased the yet-to-be-released Oakley Jawbone (Thanks Welchy!) This was a crowd pleaser, and early feedback is great.
