Gomez finished 2007 ranked no. 1 in the world, and was crowned BG Triathlon World Cup Series champion. It was the second straight overall title for Gomez, an award that earned him a $40,000 bonus in 2007. At one point he finished on the podium in 15 straight races, and he has won nine World Cup events. The all-time record for World Cup victories is 11, by Canada’s Simon Whitfield. Gomez has had to battle his own government’s sport governing body, which forced him to lose his international sporting license. But Oakley’s Chilean speedster stunned the Triathlon world with an inspiring charge with 500 meters remaining, powering past previous leader Emma Jackson, Andrea Hewitt and Helen Jenkins all the way to a thrilling finish for her first-ever Elite ITU World Title at the Dextro Energy Triathlon Series round in Lausanne Crossing the line in 58 minutes, 35 seconds, Barbara refused to let up in the final stretch, fighting off attacks by Jackson. When the run dropped into action, Jenkins set the pace for the leading group, with Hewitt, Jackson, Barbara and Ashleigh Gentle rounding out the leaders pack.

    Ironman, say hello to a new World Record. Oakley Triathlete Marino Vanhoenacker smashed the 14-year-old Ironman World Record on the lightly extended course at Ironman Austria after narrowly missing the feat last year by a mere 98 seconds. Under intense pressure to nab his sixth Ironman Austria race, Marino powered through to victory and history with media fanfare hyping the record. And it was definitely a resounding performance. He charged out of the water with the first group, took the lead on the bike and extended his monster lead as the event raged on. When it was all said and done at 7:45:58 hours, he clipped Van Lierde’s standing record set in Roth in 1997 by 4:29 minutes.

    It might as well have been Ironman New Zealand. Oakley’s Jo Lawn, a seven-time NZ winner, waxed the women’s field at the Port Macquarie Half Ironman, finishing 22 minutes ahead of runner-up contender Madeleine Oldfield.
