Home Turf: Oakley’s Terenzo Bozzone Bests Fellow Kiwi to Take Taupo Half Ironman
Everyone knew Terenzo Bozzone was the favorite to run away with the Taupo Half Ironman Title this past week.
But young gunner Matt Burgess, a fellow Kiwi (New Zealand native), had other plans. Despite a monster challenge from Burgess all throughout the race, Terenzo eventually came out on top, finishing the 2km swim, 90km ride and 21km run in 4:06:40 – a mere 16 seconds ahead for the victory.
“Today was pretty tough,” Terenzo said, rockin’ his Oakley Jawbone shades. “Matt Burgess is a true talent. I got told earlier in the week he was focusing on getting this race nailed – I was watching his back most of the day.”
In cloudy conditions with a slight gust, Andrew Mackay was the first out of the water ahead of Terenzo and Burgess.
Terenzo trailed Burgess early on the ride, and they continued to battle for the lead during the 21.1km run.
“I think he wanted to lead from start to finish and he almost did. I had to pull out all the stops and use all the experience I’ve gained over the years to hold on to the win.”
The dogfight effort from his closest finisher and his perseverance at the tail end of the race made the triumph that much sweeter.
“I’ve had an exciting year traveling the world but there’s nowhere better than New Zealand and nothing better than competing at home.”
