You couldn’t have asked for a more fitting final to the ITU World Triathlon Series. In a rematch between perennial favorites and 2012 Olympic medalists, Javier Gomez Noya and the Brownlee brothers, the entire world title came down to a final sprint between the sport’s two powerhouses. Gomez Noya was able to outlast Jonny Brownlee, reversing the final medal count at the Summer Olympics just a year earlier at the same venue where the Spaniard took second prize and Jonny won bronze. Unfortunately for the Olympic gold medalist, Alistair Brownlee was hobbled by an ankle injury and couldn’t race with his brother and Gomez Noya to the finish. Mario Mola of Spain took third place in the race.
