Kazu Kokubo triumphed at the recent US Open of Snowboarding. But it wasn’t his own glory that drove him to dominate the competition. Oakley’s Japanese Team Ripper charged with a heavy heart as recent news of the gargantuan disasters in his homeland weighed on his mind. As he snatched the victory, his words reflected his thoughts. “I’m so stoked and so happy,” a smiling Kazu said, rocking his new Signature Series googles at the US Open. “I hope my win brings a little joy and happiness to Japan.” With the country’s troubles still at the forefront of his thoughts, he recently took another step to display his care by announcing his support for Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support (JEARS).

There’s no doubt that the recent earthquake and tsunami devastation in Japan was weighing down on his mind. But Oakley Star Snowboarder Kazu Kokubo charged forward and represented his native country in grand fashion at the US Open Snowboarding Championships in Vermont last week, emerging victorious in the Pipe final with a frontside alley-oop nosebone, front 900, Michaelchuck, frontside double cork 1080, to a Cab 1080 melon. Absolutely sick. But he wasn’t the only Oakley rider on the podiums.

It’s definitely no surprise. But we’re just as pumped as ever. Oakley Snowboard Stars Shaun White, Kazuhiro Kokubo and Matt Ladley threw down big time at the Snowboard SuperPipe Elimination on Thursday night, advancing and setting the stage for what’s sure to be an epic, Oakley-laced final event on Sunday evening at Winter X Games 15. O’s high-powered crew was lead by none other than Shaun himself, whose back-to-back double-cork 1080s on his first of two laps took the night’s top score of 92.00…all in his newly unveiled, signature-series ‘Airbrake’ goggles.
