Sam took up tennis at the age of eight after a friend gave her a tennis racquet for Christmas. She used to hit at the local courts with her brother, Daniel. He soon realised she had above-average ability and convinced their parents, Diane and Tony, to give Sam coaching lessons. She went away on her first overseas trip at the age of 13, competing in the World Youth Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. At 14 she joined the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) under Geoff Masters and in 2001, when she was 16, Sam joined the Australian Institute of Sport tennis program.     The media and commentators focused on Serena Williams. Meanwhile, an overlooked Sam Stosur was well on track to shock the Tennis World. Oakley’s Aussie Tennis Star dominated the former champ – 6-2, 6-3 – in the US Open Final on Sunday, claiming her first-ever Grand Slam triumph after one of the cleanest, most aggressive matches in the sport’s recent history. The victory also handed Australia its first Women’s Grand Slam Singles champ in more than 31 years. But of course, the path to glory was no easy feat.

    Armageddon was descending upon New York City. Or so it seemed. In the midst of sprawling metropolis’ first major shutdown of the entire public transit system (MTA) – in anticipation of Hurricane Irene – the city was in an eerie state of calm. But peering into Times Square, the cameras of the nationally prominent Dateline NBC program were curiously zoomed in at one location. One slammed location – filled with people. Tennis fans from across the globe, in town for the start of the US Open scheduled to start just a couple days later, packed the impressively placed Oakley Store for the scheduled “Hang with the Pros” event – set to feature ATP (Men’s) World Top 20 Ranked Janko Tipsarevic, WTA (Women’s) World No. 9 Sam Stosur and ATP World Doubles No. 1 Duo, the Bryan Brothers. And the media took notice.     Sports like Tennis are as much of a mind game as they are pure athleticism. No one knows this better than Oakley International Tennis Star Janko Tipsarevic. He recently revealed his three toughest opponents. And not surprisingly, he’s really, really close to one of them. Janko is currently raging into the semifinals at the AEGON International 2011 in Eastbourne after topping Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(2). He’ll take on World No. 59 Kei Nishikori of Japan next.
