Sam took up tennis at the age of eight after a friend gave her a tennis racquet for Christmas. She used to hit at the local courts with her brother, Daniel. He soon realised she had above-average ability and convinced their parents, Diane and Tony, to give Sam coaching lessons. She went away on her first overseas trip at the age of 13, competing in the World Youth Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. At 14 she joined the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) under Geoff Masters and in 2001, when she was 16, Sam joined the Australian Institute of Sport tennis program.     Top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan won back-to-back US Men’s Clay Court Championship crowns in Houston Saturday to move to within two titles of equaling the all-time doubles titles record. The Bryans won the match, 6-3, 7-5, over Australian Stephen Huss and South African Wesley Moodie, a team that won Wimbledon in 2005.

    Oakley’s Samantha Stosur finally put an end to a dubious finals jinx in Osaka on Sunday, beating Francesca Schiavone for her very first singles title on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at the HP Open. Before this week, Stosur’s Tour résumé was about as complete as any, apart from one thing. She had 22 titles and the No.1 ranking in doubles and a large collection of Top 10 wins in singles, making it as high as No.13 herself. But that first singles title continued to elude her, even though she had been a win away many times, going 0-5 in finals. But that all changed in Osaka.
