Sam took up tennis at the age of eight after a friend gave her a tennis racquet for Christmas. She used to hit at the local courts with her brother, Daniel. He soon realised she had above-average ability and convinced their parents, Diane and Tony, to give Sam coaching lessons. She went away on her first overseas trip at the age of 13, competing in the World Youth Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. At 14 she joined the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) under Geoff Masters and in 2001, when she was 16, Sam joined the Australian Institute of Sport tennis program.     Tennis fans have been spoiled as of late with a plethora of Grand Slam championships, combined with a special tournament last month in London. Coming off of an exhilarating Wimbledon championship at the beginning of July, the tennis world got the added bonus of the London Olympic tournament at the beginning of August. Coming off plenty of recent success, athletes including Samantha Stosur, Janko Tipsarevic, Yaroslava Shvedova and Bob and Mike Bryan will take to the courts in New York aimed at another prosperous US Open.

    Bob and Mike Bryan are more than accustomed to winning. All the time. But after grabbing their first Summer Games Title Saturday in Doubles Tennis over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Micheal Llodra of France, the heavily decorated American twins embraced each other – intensely – as if they’d never nabbed a victory ever before. “That’s the longest we’ve hugged,” Bob said. “We’ve spent 50,000 hours together, and probably 30,000 on the court, working our butts off to get here. That hug right there was a culmination of it all.” The dynamic duo, who claimed a third place finish in Beijing four years prior, finally achieved their career Golden Slam: racking up all four majors and the Summer Games…in addition to their already tantalizing 11 major titles and their seventh World No. 1 ranking in nine years.
