Tour de France

Bradley Wiggins is undoubtedly one of the most famous and charismatic cyclists in the world and will be leading Team Sky’s Tour de France hopes again in 2012. The Londoner first made his name on the track and achieved three Olympic Games gold medals and seven World Championship titles before switching his focus to the road in 2009. That year he equaled the best-ever performance by a British rider with his fourth-placed finish at the Tour de France, and it was that remarkable showing which earned him his flagship role with Team Sky in 2010. In the first summit finish of the 2012 Tour de France, things were lining up to be British Team Sky’s kind of day. With sprinters like early stage winners Andre Greipel and Peter Sagan expected to let the climbers have the glory on the day, the scene was set for the heavy contenders to compete for a stage victory. Enter Bradley Wiggins. Considered the rider who would give defending champion Cadel Evans a run for his money in this year’s Tour, Wiggins rode in the front of the peloton virtually the entire 199km of the stage from Tomblaine up to the Vosges mountains ski station of La Planche des Belles Filles. Protecting and pacing him during the grueling climb up the last 6km was his Kenyan-born, British teammate, Christopher Froome. Right behind them was Team BMC’s Cadel Evans. It was no surprise Wiggins and Evans were in the hunt right to the finish. However, Froome eventually captured the stage victory, as Wiggins and Evans seemingly ran out of gas coming up the final few m...

The man they call “Spartacus,” Fabian Cancellara, opened the Tour de France in a way he has become accustomed to in recent years. Cancellara won the race-opening prologue for the fifth time in his career, following victories in 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2010. The reigning Olympic Time Trial Champion completed the 6.4km course in a day’s best 7 minutes 13.46 seconds, earning him the yellow jersey, at least for a day, if not longer. What makes Cancellara’s prologue victory even more impressive is the fact that he is coming off of a recent surgery to repair his broken collarbone, an injury he received during a crash in Flanders. The RadioShack-Nissan rider finished 7 seconds ahead of one of the overall Tour favorite’s and fellow Oakley rider, Bradley Wiggins (Sky). Reigning Tour de France Champion, Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) finished 13th on the day, 17 seconds behind Cancellara and 10 seconds behind Wiggins.
