Since moving to the BMC Racing Team in 2010, Cadel Evans has enjoyed some success. Evans won stage seven of the Giro d’Italia with a dominating sprint from the front of a small group. He finished fifth overall.
Evans also held the yellow jersey for stage nine of the 2010 Tour de France, but he rode that stage with a hairline fracture in his left elbow (caused during a crash in the previous stage). Unfortunately, he lost significant time to the leaders during stage nine, which put him out of serious contention for overall victory. He finished the tour in 26th place.
In 2009, Evans won the men’s World Championship road race in Mendrisio, Switzerland. In fact, that season Evans became one of Australia’s most successful cyclists, with two podium places at the Tour de France. He has joined an elite group of cyclists who have worn all three leaders jerseys; the Maglia Rosa leader’s jersey at the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy) in 2002, the yellow leader’s jersey for four days in the 2008 Tour de France, and the gold leader’s jersey in 2009 in the Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain). In 2011, Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France.
