The best part of TAC is the fact that being a rider or staff member of the event, one gets to live the life of snowboard legend Terje Haakonsen. TAC is truly about enjoying life as Mr. Haakonsen sees and experiences the world, which is a very special thing indeed. Unlike most contests that are all about, “Flights, Contest Formats and Hotel Rooms,” says Terje. “We want the riders to experience more and stay fresh, whether that is days off skating, playing some football or just enjoying the city they are visiting.”

It was the first judged day of the tenth annual The Oakley Arctic Challenge, and characters came from all nooks and crannies to see what was to go bounding from atop the lip-even Ullr, the norse god of snow. That zealous bastard poked his nose into the day’s business from the get go, and made sure speed was an issue for most of the day. It’s nice of him to think that fresh snow was wanted, but it was bad timing. It pretty much groped nuts.

Practices usually suck. And are boring. Everyone can attest. USUALLY. USUALLY. For the 10th year of The Oakley Arctic Challenge, even the weather is Oslo was cooperating in hopes for seeing some time bomb watch-scooping airs. Most of the all time heavy hitters were in their heavy hitting’s heaviest on Tuesday and Wednesday. The man who started the event last decade, Terje Haakonsen, wasted no time in attempting to claim what is rightfully his: the title.

The first day of practice saw powder turns and the past / present / future of snowboarding all come together. Oslo has been receiving significant snowfall for the past month straight and it has not let up. The result has given the new venue at Linderudkollen a warm white glow to its densely wooded forest backdrop.

As many now know Travis Rice has been on a whirlwind of travel and shredding that has left his body pretty beaten. And after a severe crash at Winter X Games that would have left most riders out for the season, Travis is going on vacation. See crash here

The Oakley Arctic Challenge (TAC) kicks off in less than one week with the first official practice starting at the arena on Monday, February 16th. It’s been snowing like mad in Oslo, which will add a nice layer to the snowmaking system inside the arena at Linderudkollen.

Thursday night on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Mayor Bloomberg declared February 5th, 2009 “Snowscrapers Day” in front 30,000 plus screaming New Yorkers. Granted there were several thousand Jersey kids from across the river attending as well to cheer on local boy and eventual winner Shayne Pospsil.

So the madness kicked off the moment we landed at JFK and then made our way to the swanky Rivington Hotel in the Lower East Side. The riders that have come out for this event are some heavy hitters, but topping the list on the Oakley side are Shaun White, Terje Haakonsen, Eero Ettala, Heikki Sorsa, Torstein Horgmo, Dustin Craven, JJ Thomas and Bjorn Leines.
