Despite the cold early temperatures and clouds, the conditions held up and the first stop of the Oakley Big Day Out surf 2006 went off! Huntington Beach 9th st., offered up 3-4 foot sets for the under 17 surfers. Southern California’s top Grom’s were present with Luke Davis, Riley Metcalf, Sean Oates and Oakley’s own David Price.

Naked provided the juice along with Chipotle burritos for lunch keeping the kids charged up. As the day progressed the winds subsided, the sun came out, and the lower tide improved the surf. The finals were stacked, with Oakley TWITCH’S™ going to the three winners along with Fender guitars.

In the Mini-Grom Division Addision Giddings, son of surf legend Dave Giddings, worked the inside re-forms and took home first place. The Boys Division was no surprise as Luke Davis, top ranked grom according to surfer magazines hot 100, took out Ian Krane. The Junior division witnessed Bryan Doheny and Ryan Harvel take the runner up positions to Jason Harris. Harris got some of the larger set waves of the day and worked them to the inside where he capitalized with a couple of huge snaps.

The awards ceremony greeted an eager crowd, awaiting the results from the day and the Oakley surfgear and eyeware. Other prizes included boardbags and trackpads from stickybumps, skateboards from surfone, tons of Future fins, and the fender Strat Pak.
