Jack's Big Day Out HB
The early morning saw classic spring surf conditions in Huntington Beach—light onshore winds and solid head high sets from a crossed up swell. By 6:30am the heats were filling up fast. The word had spread that Jack’s and Oakley teamed up to offer up a free day of surfing, including breakfast, lunch, and tons of prizes.
The field maxed out at 80 competitors and the three divisions were formed. The 18 and under Juniors division was stacked with all the local HB and Newport rippers, including young Dane McCrystal. The Mini Groms went straight to a final in an eight-man plus parent’s heat.
Lunch showed up courtesy of Oakley at 12:30pm and then it was time for the finals. The mini groms went nuts, almost maxing out the 12 wave total by catching every ripple that presented itself. The Boys division competitors worked the outside through the flat mid section into the inside bowl. The strategy paid off for Kanoa Igarashi who took the outright win, with his brother winning the Mini Groms. In the Juniors it was Hawaii/ Newport local, Ford Archbold taking the victory over Volcom Champion Michael Dumphy and Jared Cassidy.
Thanks to everyone involved at Jack’s, Brillo Productions, Oakley, Transworld, Jerry K, Sambazon, Cytomax and the City of Huntington Beach.
