J-Bay: Brazilian Surf Star Andriano De Souza Steals South African Thunder With Billabong Pro Victory
South Africans have been faring well at their ‘home break’ the past couple years at Billabong Pro J-Bay. But this year, a full on International free-for-all unfolded.
It was Oakley’s Brazilian Bomber, Adriano Souza, however – who’d top the talent stacked field with an impressive 16.00 Final Heat score over Frenchman Joan Duru. Riding a set right over the rocks – snapping one of his fins out – our ASP World No. 4 pocketed US $25,000 for his triumph over a list of riders through the final four rounds that represented Brazil, Australia, Spain, Hawaii, California, France, South Africa and Portugal.
“I’ve come to Jeffreys Bay for so many years, and have always seen the guys win the Billabong Pro, and now it’s my turn,” Adriano said, rocking his Oakley eyewear, performance boardshorts and overall apparel. “J-Bay is a special place for me…I’m going to remember this win for my whole life.”
With whirling rain and wind adding to the already existent tension in the air, Duru quickly racked up a 9.27 to open up the Final after Adriano would lose a fin to the rocks after grabbing the first scoring wave.
But despite the setback, the Brazilian displayed just why he sits as one of the top surfers on the Planet – charging back with an 8.33 before sealing the deal overall.
Charging through the Quarterfinals by taking out some of the clear favorites, Duru knocked out Oakley’s South African star, Jordy Smith, en route to the Final Round. All while Adriano clipped the likes of Ezekiel Lau and Mitch Coleburn.
But it was our former World No. 1 who’d ultimately triumph in South Africa – swinging some momentum his way as the tour rages on.
