Brazil is simply full of talented rippers.

That’s why it was more than a surprise to Kolohe “Brother” Andino when it was he and fellow American Tanner Gudauskas left in the final of the ASP World 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Kolohe emerged victorious with his 14.33 heat-wave total, earning him a massive 3,500 points in the World Ranking.

“I’m so stoked,” Kolohe said, sporting his Oakley Frogskin eyewear. “I thought that I could reach the Quarterfinals here, but I never imagined that I would win the event! Unfortunately, conditions today (Saturday) made things really difficult and I think I was lucky to have caught some good waves. In the Final, I started off well and then I just used my strategy to hold on for the win since there weren’t too many good waves.”

Heavy rain and tough conditions hit Itamabuca Beach – making it all that more rough for Kolohe in his quest to emerge with the win over Gudauskas.

But he charged the 2-3 foot waves, throwing down a rotating no-grab aerial – topped by four consecutive off-the-tops turns on a left on his first wave, landing him a 7.5 (out of 10).

But he wasn’t quite done. He followed up boldly with a 6.83 after a series of rail-to-rail carves and sick snaps for his 14.33 heat total during the event’s ESPN Brazil broadcast.

“It’s a pleasure for me to surf this Final against Tanner (Gudauskas) since he’s from United States just like me,” he continued. “It’s my first time here at Itamambuca and I’ve been staying all week at Guigui’s (Wiggolly Dantas) house. For us, it was really improbable to have a Final between two Americans with all of the great Brazilian surfers on today’s waves.”

Congrats Brother!
