SA Oakley Surfers Dominate Internationally with Victories in Japan and England
The weekend of Sunday, August 6 proved to be a momentous time for South African surfing, with Oakley team surfers Royden Bryson ( East London) and David Weare (Umhlanga) winning top rated ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) events at opposite ends of the globe.
Oakley’s GM, Steven Adshade commented, "What a weekend, this has been a great day for South African surfing as David and Royden lead the SA assault on the world stage. We are thrilled with David’s and Royden’s performance, Oakley has a strong heritage in innovation, and their futuristic and progressive surfing style follows the same ideals, thus we are very proud to be associated with two such phenomenal riders and their recognition worldwide."
Bryson won the 6 Star rated, Billabong presents the Yumeya Tahara Pro in Japan. That victory earned him 2500 ratings points. The Oakley team surfer has shot up the WQS ratings ladder into second place, only 36 points behind current leader Neco Padaratz (Brazil).
Last Sunday Bryson pulled out all the stops to snatch victory from Brazilian Bernardo Miranda with two 9.0 point rides in the final of the event.
At the same time, Oakley’s World Championship Tour (WCT) rookie Weare scooped first place in the five star Rip Curl Boardmasters WQS event in Newquay ( England). Weare defeated Corey Ziems from Australia with some high performance surfing in the small, weak conditions.
Weare, who finished second to fellow Durbanite Antonio Bortoletto in the 2005 Boardmasters, also earned 2000 ratings points that see him join Bryson and Ricky Basnett from Durban’s Bluff in the top WQS ratings.
"I am super stoked about having won last weekend in Newquay. It is the biggest victory in my career so far and what made it even better was the fact that Royden won the six star contest in Japan on the same day. This win feels amazing I wish I could keep the feeling going a little longer," commented Weare who is currently in France preparing for the six star Sooruz Lacanau Pro which takes place from August 14 to 20.
