One Finalist Decided As Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge Runs Early At Keramas
Remaining surfers competing in the Oakley Pro Junior Challenge Final for 2009 made their way to Keramas River-mouth in Bali early this morning to run three superb heats on prime high-tide conditions.
With a solid six-foot plus swell and ideal winds, today’s heats saw surfers committing to massive on-face maneuvers with semi-final and one final positions being decided.
French surfer Marc Lacomare, who was a semi-finalist in the 2008 Oakley Global Challenge, was the morning’s dominant surfer. His precise and powerful surfing was rewarded by winning a ticket to the finals and a crack at the $20K prize purse.
Lacomare and Brazilian standout Alejo Muniz won their respective quarter-final heats in the early dawn heats and then went on to face each other in the one semi final heat that was completed today.
While Muniz had been the highest scoring standout all event, Lacomare was the surfer who continued to increase his performance, finding the better waves and unleashing his refined and powerful backhand attack to win through to the final.
“I’m so happy to again make the final of this fantastic event,” said Lacomare. “I really hope I can go one better and win tomorrow. My surfing has been getting better each heat and I feel really good surfing such a perfect wave like Keramas.”
The early quarter finals saw South Africa’s Brendon Gibbens defeated by Lacomare and Charly Martin (France) defeated by Muniz, with both surfers placing equal fifth overall.
Incredibly, just two heats remain—one semi-final between Hawaiian Kai Barger and Australian Sam Wrench with the winner to take on Lacomare in the final. Tomorrow morning, with perfect tides and swell expected to deliver awesome conditions, is the likely climax to this event.
Over seven days to date, heats have been surfed per day as follows: 3, 3, 5, 4, 3, 0, 3, with a final day of 2 heats predicted. The schedule, unlikely to ever be matched in professional surfing, capitalized on optimal conditions at a world-class wave.

Quarter 1: Sam Wrench (AUS) 13.50, Granger Larsen (Haw) 10.60
Quarter 2: Kai Barger (HAW) 15.00, Clay Marzo (HAW) 13.30
