The Balinese people believe that the ocean is home to the spirits of their ancestors. It’s the place where ashes of the deceased are spread, forever linking the people with the body of water. It’s for that reason, on a cloudy morning on Echo Beach in Canggu that the Pemangku, or Chief of the Ceremony, asked that the spirits welcome the world’s best junior surfers into their sacred waters for the Oakley World Pro Junior.
On the eve of Day 1 of the Oakley World Pro Junior waiting period, the waves at both Canggu and Keramas made it pretty clear that action was going to begin with first light on Saturday morning. Multiple swells in the water off of the picturesque and wave-rich island of Bali had both spots firing and the lineups packed with world-class junior talent.
In the newest episode of the “Oakley Dispatch” Surf Webisode series, Adam Melling and Lee Wilson (above) go off the beaten path to travel to the remote Indonesian island of Sumatra for some “Fun in the Sun.” The boys end up getting plenty of perfect blue sky days while scoring non-stop fun right-hand barrels and air sections. After Melling departs for the WCT event at Lower Trestles in Southern California, Lee jumps on another plane to throw caution to the wind at Lagundri Bay in Nias.
