San Clemente Local Continues to Shine

San Clemente local boy Kolohe Andino has been on fire this season continuing to add to his list of accomplishments. Most recently he clinched his third-consecutive ASP 6-Star event at the Fantastic Noodles Kangaroo Island Pro when he defeated Kiwi surfer Jay Quinn of New Zealand at Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island, Australia.

The win was on the heels of back-to-back triumphs in Brazil and he carried that momentum straight through to Kangroo Island with consistently solid surfing throughout the event.

“Kangaroo Island is like an ideal place for me,” said Kolohe. “It’s really country, there’s not a lot of people around, it’s great. There was even some wallabies hopping around our cabin the other night, my friends and I were freaking out, it was pretty cool.”

The victory has important implication for the talented 17-year old surfer. The points garnered from the event catapulted him up the ASP World Rankings to No. 24, which put him within a striking range to join the elite ASP World Tour for 2012.

“It feels kind of surreal right now,” continued Kolohe. “Hopefully I can make the ASP World Title Series for next year now. I’m just competitive and want to win, I knew there was a lot of opportunity for me to do well here and I’m happy it went my way. With guys like Gabriel Medina winning events on tour, I just really want to get there. After he won that last event I just thought that I have to be on there too.”

From Australia Kolohe traveled to the North Shore to compete in the first event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Reef Hawaiian Pro in which he finished 13th. Now due to the expanded competition at Pipeline, the ASP has awarded two wildcard spots to surfers next in line on the ASP World Rankings and you guessed it! Oakley’s firing young gun got a spot along side 25-year old Willian Cardoso of Brazil. The event waiting period begind December 8 and runs through Dec 20. Kolohe’s Round One match up is against Aussie Laurie Towner and could likely hit the water on the eighth as there is heave swell heading to the North Shore. Congrats and good luck Brother!
