Bio

Nat Young just goes surfing. He doesn’t think about the fact that a legendary, world champion surfer shares his name, or that he regularly earns his waves amongst one of the heaviest crews of local regulators, because none of that matters when you’re a stoked grom. Life is too good—and he’s just stoked to go surfing everyday. He wants to make it to the WCT, so he knows that he will have to do well in some Pro Junior Events and then duplicate that success on the WQS, but right now he’s focused on keeping up on schoolwork while away for ‘re a stoked grom with the kind of schedule he does, you don’t have time to think about much else. Training in the gladiator pit at The Lane everyday and sharing the namesake of a great surfing champion doesn’t seem to register as anything more than part of his daily routine. Nat Young’s biggest challenge as a professional surfer may be something that isn’t self-imposed at all, but to live up to all that hype.

  • Congratulations on winning the Oakley Pro Junior North American Championships in your hometown. Did you have a strategy for the final? It looked like there was a lot of current and that you never stopped paddling. What were the challenges you faced during the contest? My strategy was to catch a couple average scores at the point just so I had something to sit on. Once I got those waves I moved over to middle peak where I knew they were scoring the lefts pretty high and I caught a couple of those. Ya there was definitely a lot of current but thanks to the jet skis we were able to get towed out. I think the biggest challenge was finding the right wave, It was hard to tell which ones were good.
  • How did you start surfing? How old were you? I started surfing when I saw some other kids my age doing it and it looked super fun. I was boogieboarding at the time.
