35th Annual Surfer Poll

Oakley’s Julian Wilson was awarded “Best Male Performance” at the 35th Annual Surfer Poll and Video Awards in Anaheim last night. The 18-year-old Australian was nominated alongside Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, Bobby Martinez and Dane Reynolds. Filmmakers and Surfer Magazine staff chose Wilson’s high-intensity, action-packed segment in Young Guns 3 as the Best Male Performance of 2007, a feat some consider as much of an accomplishment as winning a world title.

Wilson was also nominated for “Most Radical Maneuver” and his technical airs and powerful cutbacks in Young Guns 3 propelled the film into winning “Movie of the Year”.

Oakley’s Bruce Irons and Layne Beachley both made Surfer Poll’s Top 10, each earning fifth place in the poll where Surfer Magazine readers decide the most influential surfers in the world.

Benji Weatherly and Sal Masekela hosted the evening, which included a performance by Angels and Airwaves. Presenters included legendary surfing icons Shaun Tomson and Brock Little, Jake Brown (best known for his recent five-story fall from the X Games Mega Ramp) and Oakley skate star Ryan Sheckler, who presented Wilson his “Best Male Performance” award.

The Grove saw a stellar turnout, but with Round 2 of the WCT event at Trestles kicking off at 8am the next day, many team managers sent their surfers home early. Fortunately there were plenty of competitors who weren’t surfing until Thursday and enough free Nicaruguan beer to keep the festivities going strong.
