Oakley is proud to announce that effective immediately, free surf innovator Bruce Irons has been named to our global eyewear team.

“Bruce plays a key role in the progression of the Oakley Eyewear Team," announced Sports Marketing Manager of Surf, Ronny Nelson. "At Oakley we base our surf team on innovation and Bruce’s creative approach to surfing will fit right in with our existing athletes Chris Ward, Nathan Fletcher and Dustin Barca. We look forward to a lifelong relationship with Bruce."

Raised on the North Shore of Kauai, Bruce started surfing at age seven, charging Pipeline at a very young age which would prove vital as his career developed. He enjoyed a successful amateur career in the States, finally going pro after graduating high school. In the first part of his professional career, the Pipeline Masters would prove to be his first big showing with a second place in 1998. This set the stage for his placing third in 2000 and finally taking home his first WCT win in 2001 when he defeated eight-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Some may wonder, how do you follow up such a ‘coming out’ party – winning Pipeline Masters? Well, Bruce had just the answer in 2004 at The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. An event considered by many as the most prestigious in all of professional surfing, which took place in forty-foot surf at Waimea Bay, Bruce took down all competition and captured the event in front of 20,000 people.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the Oakley team," said Bruce Irons. "Oakley has always prided themselves on their technology and top of the line athletes like Lance Armstrong, Shaun White, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Sheckler. So, when Oakley approached me to be my eyewear sponsor, it was a huge honor that they would want to put me in the same class with those athletes. I am super stoked to be on board."
