The stage is set. The qualifications and training and travel has passed. The goal now is simple: shine on the brightest stage in all of sport – the Olympics. Our top snowboarders and freeskiers have arrived to Sochi, Russia, prepared to step into the spotlight. A few have been on the Olympic stage before, but for most, this will likely be an experience like none other in their careers. The presence of action sports in the Olympics has increased dramatically for this XXII Winter Olympics Games. Snowboarding made its first foray into the Olympics in 1998 in Nagano, Japan when Halfpipe made its debut. This year, Snowboard Slopestyle and Freeskiing Halfpipe and Slopestyle join the frey, and all of a sudden the Olympics are a bit more exciting, a bit more hip – a bit more relevant (yes, we’re sure there are heaps of young people influenced both athletically and culturally by Biathlon).

If what went down at Winter X Games over the past four days is any indication of what will happen in Sochi in two weeks, the biggest event in sports is in for quite the show. In what has come to be a sort of annual tradition, the tricks got bigger and gnarlier and new names were added to the action sports conversation.

It wasn’t the season Sebastien Toutant had expected. One of the most talented young snowboarders of his generation – the generation of Mark McMorris and Stale Sandbech and Torstein Horgmo – he already had three Winter X Games medals to his name, including a Gold in Slopestyle in 2011. But coming into Euro X Games in Tignes, France, his 2012/13 season had mostly been filled with near misses – a caught rail here, an over-rotated spin there, a finish one spot clear of the podium. In Tignes, Toutant kept the mishaps and the near-misses at bay. In the Slopestyle Final, he took the early lead with his first run (88.0), which put him in good position to podium. With McMorris among the finalists, Toutant knew he’d have to fight to hold on to the top spot. On his second run he landed a clean triple cork, followed by a stomped Cab 1260, earning a score of 95.0. McMorris would come up just short in his third and final run (94.0) for Silver, and the Gold would belong to Toutant.
