Setting the Stage: Shaun White, Kazu and Matt Ladley Advance to Finals in Snowboard SuperPipe at Winter X 15
It’s definitely no surprise. But we’re just as pumped as ever. Oakley Snowboard Stars Shaun White, Kazuhiro Kokubo and Matt Ladley threw down big time at the Snowboard SuperPipe Elimination on Thursday night, advancing and setting the stage for what’s sure to be an epic, Oakley-laced final event on Sunday evening at Winter X Games 15. O’s high-powered crew was lead by none other than Shaun himself, whose back-to-back double-cork 1080s on his first of two laps took the night’s top score of 92.00…all in his newly unveiled, signature-series ‘Airbrake’ goggles.
In a season of Olympic qualifications the level of pipe riding has grown very quickly compared to the past 4 years. 2010 will go down as the year of the double cork 10’s and 12’s. And a podium didn’t go by without all three riders at least having a double in their run. This year’s US Open was the final major halfpipe event of the year, and minus a few super stars with Olympic burnout the rider’s field was one of the most talented all year.
The second US Snowboarding Grand Pix has come to Mammoth Mountain in sunny California. And the conditions today were picture perfect for riding, viewing, and figuring out who is going to make the US Olympic Snowboard team. This weekend another pipe event will take us one step closer to the team announcement at the end of January in Park City.
