Stellar Riding Goes Down at the 12th Canadian Shakedown at Mont Saint-Sauveur

Despite the late-season chilly weather, there was plenty of energy from the massive crowd at Saint-Sauveur to rev the internal engines of the three-dozen athletes on hand for the 12th annual Ride Shakedown weekend. With a Shakedown course that included a Big Air jump and series of flashy rail features, and a jam-session format, along with a separate Rail Jam, there was plenty of opportunity for the talented crew to get creative.

Six Medals For Oakley Snowboarders at Euro X Games; Toutant and Norendal Win Gold in Slopestyle

It wasn’t the season Sebastien Toutant had expected. One of the most talented young snowboarders of his generation – the generation of Mark McMorris and Stale Sandbech and Torstein Horgmo – he already had three Winter X Games medals to his name, including a Gold in Slopestyle in 2011. But coming into Euro X Games in Tignes, France, his 2012/13 season had mostly been filled with near misses – a caught rail here, an over-rotated spin there, a finish one spot clear of the podium. In Tignes, Toutant kept the mishaps and the near-misses at bay.

In the Slopestyle Final, he took the early lead with his first run (88.0), which put him in good position to podium. With McMorris among the finalists, Toutant knew he’d have to fight to hold on to the top spot. On his second run he landed a clean triple cork, followed by a stomped Cab 1260, earning a score of 95.0. McMorris would come up just short in his third and final run (94.0) for Silver, and the Gold would belong to Toutant.

"Jake Blauvelt: Naturally": Five Minutes With Director Greg Martin of Friday Productions

Since the beginning of the New Year, Jake Blauvelt and the Friday Productions crew have been doing what they do best: chasing snow. Never one to settle for average (terrain, angles, style, etc.) and fully healed from his injuries, Jake has been going non-stop to make sure that the film he and the crew release in Fall 2013, “Jake Blauvelt: Naturally,” meets his high standards.

That said, when the director of the film, Greg Martin of Friday Productions, stopped by headquarters between trips, we decided it was a good opportunity to get an update on what’s transpired in these past two months.

Oakley Signs Four-Time Winter X Snowboard Slopestyle Gold Medalist, Jamie Anderson

It’s not every day that you sign an elite-level athlete with Jamie Anderson’s pedigree. A four-time Winter X Games gold medalist and a U.S. Olympic-hopeful, Anderson joined Oakley’s women’s snowboard team just as she was about to embark on her mission to defend her Winter X Games 16 slopestyle gold medal. She succeeded, and now she’s on to her next goal for 2013: qualifying for the top spot on the Women’s U.S. Snowboard Team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

When you’re the best in the business at what you do, you set your goals high – and you partner with companies that match those only-the-best standards.

Oakley Snowboarders Win Nine Medals at Winter X 17; Shaun White Six-Peats in Superpipe

The world’s largest gathering of action sports athletes didn’t disappoint. Once again, as has become tradition at Winter X Games, performance boundaries were broken and the tricktionary was expanded; records were set and new names burst onto the scene. Thick in the historic happenings and memorable moments were our Oakley winter athletes, leading the charge for where their respective sports will be going in the coming years.

For the sixth consecutive year it was Shaun White who put the exclamation point on another phenomenal Winter X. A dominating performance in the Superpipe, highlighted by a record 24.1-foot air, resulted in his sixth consecutive Gold Medal in the event and his 23rd X Games medal overall.

Horgmo, McMorris and Sandbech Put on an Historic Triplefest in X Games Big Air

“It was just f**king amazing to be a part of what just happened tonight,” said Torstein Horgmo, a gold X Games medal dangling from his neck, and still slightly winded after the 18-minute jam session Big Air final.

Trailing Oakley teammates Stale Sandbech and defending gold medalist Mark McMorris throughout the final, Horgmo – who won the event in 2011 – had one last chance to land the move he believed would be the difference-maker: the switch backside triple cork 1440, a trick he landed for the first time a week before coming to Aspen and one that had never been landed in competition.

Youth is wasted on the young, some say. Well, in “Pretty Wise,” the new film by People Films, it certainly appears like the crop of 11 rising stars (along with three veterans) are effectively putting their early years and blossoming talent to good use. Hitting the city streets from Quebec to Anchorage, the backcountry powder in Whistler and Montana, and then Austria, Mt. Baker, Japan and Mammoth, as well, along the way, the spotlight is shined on faces you’ve certainly seen but maybe not yet been able to identify. Theirs are names and faces you better get to know.
