Seb Toutant

Snowboarding

At Winter X Games 2011, then-19-year-old Seb Toutant became the first male rookie to win SBD Slopestyle since Travis Rice in 2002. The young Canadian posted a 97 during the Elimination round, the highest score ever awarded in WX Slopestyle (male or female, Snowboard or Skiing). Add in the silver at WX Europe in 2011 and bronze in Big Air at WX Aspen in 2012, and you’ll understand why he’s seen as one of the most promising competitive talents around. The guy is a contest madman and a competitive machine. His tricks are big...

Despite the late-season chilly weather, there was plenty of energy from the massive crowd at Saint-Sauveur to rev the internal engines of the three-dozen athletes on hand for the 12th annual Ride Shakedown weekend. With a Shakedown course that included a Big Air jump and series of flashy rail features, and a jam-session format, along with a separate Rail Jam, there was plenty of opportunity for the talented crew to get creative.

It wasn’t the season Sebastien Toutant had expected. One of the most talented young snowboarders of his generation – the generation of Mark McMorris and Stale Sandbech and Torstein Horgmo – he already had three Winter X Games medals to his name, including a Gold in Slopestyle in 2011. But coming into Euro X Games in Tignes, France, his 2012/13 season had mostly been filled with near misses – a caught rail here, an over-rotated spin there, a finish one spot clear of the podium. In Tignes, Toutant kept the mishaps and the near-misses at bay. In the Slopestyle Final, he took the early lead with his first run (88.0), which put him in good position to podium. With McMorris among the finalists, Toutant knew he’d have to fight to hold on to the top spot. On his second run he landed a clean triple cork, followed by a stomped Cab 1260, earning a score of 95.0. McMorris would come up just short in his third and final run (94.0) for Silver, and the Gold would belong to Toutant.

Since the beginning of the New Year, Jake Blauvelt and the Friday Productions crew have been doing what they do best: chasing snow. Never one to settle for average (terrain, angles, style, etc.) and fully healed from his injuries, Jake has been going non-stop to make sure that the film he and the crew release in Fall 2013, “Jake Blauvelt: Naturally,” meets his high standards. That said, when the director of the film, Greg Martin of Friday Productions, stopped by headquarters between trips, we decided it was a good opportunity to get an update on what’s transpired in these past two months.
