The party started and then it never really stopped. That’s sort of the nature of Freestyle.ch in Zurich. Equal parts spectator-stimuli-overload, controlled-chaos and winter-kickoff. Snowboarding and skiing, FMX and Mountain Bike, and then crossover events. It’s a lot to take in, it’s a lot to enjoy.

One guy who has always enjoyed the event is freeskier Henrik Harlaut. He’s been competing at the evnet since he was 13 and already had two wins (2010, 2012) to his name. Harlaut has always been of the upbeat variety, but he’s had even more to smile about in 2013. Ever since implementing the nose butter double cork 1260 into his Big Air repertoire, the guy has been unbeatable. He has an X Games Gold Medal and now a third Freestyle.ch title to prove it.

“It’s always one of my favorite events of the year. It’s always a great jump , a ton of people come out to watch and the weather is good,” Harlaut said. “I’ve been doing a lot of nose butters in recent contests, but this one was really big, especially for a city Big Air, and well blunted with a good landing, so I was super stoked to win. It’s a great way to start my season.”

Harlaut’s score of 95.33 just beat Kai Mahler’s 95, forcing the young Swiss Olympic hopeful to settle for second. That’s a second consecutive runner-up finish to Harlaut in major Big Air competitions after taking the Silver Medal at X Games. What was even more stunning for Mahler was that in the eight months between those results, he had surgery to repair a torn ACL that resulted from the triple cork that won him the medal in Aspen.

In snowboarding, Stale Sandbech stomped the first triple cork of the event, but still finished runner-up in Big Air.

“Freestyle.ch was a blast this year. I had such a fun time riding in front of the amazing crowd in Zurich,” Sandbech said. “I was happy to get second and I’m ready for a new season. Let it snow!”
