Oakley Rider Search Winner Spends Weekend With Simon
One of the six grand prize winners of last year’s Oakley Rider Search, an online contest hosted by Loop’d Network that invited amateur action sports athletes to submit videos to be ranked and rated, cashed in on his grand prize at the Simon Dumont Cup last weekend.
“Not only was the Dumont Cup an awesome experience for Aspen, it created some special friendships and opened doors for his future,” says Aspen’s mother Stacy. " It will be something he remembers forever."
Promised the Ultimate Oakley Experience after winning the ski category of the contest, eight-year old Aspen Spora won a trip to Sunday River, Maine for the inagural Simon Dumont Cup.
Aspen and his mom traveled from Truckee, California to Maine for a weekend of skiing and spectating and went home with stories of break dancing and sharing Easter dinner with Simon Dumont and his family. Here’s the weekend from Aspen’s POV (transcribed by his mom):
We drove from Truckee, California to Copper Mountain, Colorado for the USASA Nationals. We went to Keystone for a day and they had an awesome mini-park and went to Breckenridge—they had really fun boxes.
After Nationals we drove to Denver. We got on two planes. We went to Chicago, then to Maine. United Airlines lost our ski bag I was really sad. I would miss practice day and skiing with Simon and all those other guys. This one old fogey told us that our luggage would not be there until tomorrow. We had to figure out what to do. Either sleep in the airport or drive to a hotel. We decided to sleep in the airport and save some money. We looked for somewhere to sleep and found some couches. A nice man who works at the airport went to find some toothpaste and a toothbrush, but I fell asleep before he got back.
We woke up and got a rental car and drove around Maine for a little bit. We got Subway and then we went back to the airport and got our Ski Bag!!! I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited to get my Skiiiii Bag!
Then we drove to the Dumont Cup and it was a long ride. I registered, and at least got to ski for 1 hour. I didn’t get much practice because all the features were to big. The first jump was a 70 footer and the 2nd was 80. I have only hit a 50, so I didn’t know if I could gap a 70.
When we were done skiing we checked into the hotel and then we went to dinner and I had my favorite soup Clam Chowder! It tasted SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. I ate 3 bowls.
I got to talk to Simon Dumont and he said the he would have the park guys make a few smaller jumps for me!!! The jumps were great. They pop you so high. I had SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most funnest and coolest part of the day was when I jumped over Jossi Wells. Jossi and me took a run. Jossi did a misty off the canon rail to a cork 900 on the 70 footer. He was going to hit the 2nd jump but someone fell, so he went on the little jump without so much speed. He did a rodeo. I thought he cleared it, so I just kept charging. I guess he landed in the middle then I jamp over Jossi. Jossi thought it was sick and gave me a $10 target gift card for jumping over him.
After skiing we hung for out for a little bit. Simon signed my forehead and gave me a mustache and I wrote loser on Steele’s forehead.
I had more Clam Chowder then after eating we went to the Foggy Goggle. I break danced the whole time. I met 3 guys that live in New York that break dance too. They taught me many things. I had a VERY VERY fun time!
The next morning we took a few runs and then around 11:30 we decided to get something to eat. We wanted some breakfast. We went to a few places but they were all on lunch, but then we drove into town and found a restaurant called Crossroads Diner. A nice guy named Frank gave me breakfast when it was lunch. I described my dream pancake to Frank. It had blueberries, whipped cream, cherries, and chocolate syrup. He made it for me and it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!
On the last day at the Dumont Cup. Simon’s dad invited me to their house for Easter dinner. It was VERY VERY special!
We packed up, drove to the airport and flew to Denver then drove from Denver to California. It was very fun and special and cool.
