RED BULL LINECATCHER LA PLAGNE, FRANCE
Last week, thirteen of worlds’ best freeskiers met in La Plagne, France for the first edition of the Red Bull Linecatcher, Freeski event that combines big mountain skiing with freestyle – bringing slopestyle tricks to the Becoin face in the French alps.
In freeride events good weather and good snow conditions are crucial to host a safe event. Due to bad weather the event was postponed several times. Nevertheless snow was very good and “course builder” Julien Regnier did a great job spicing up the big Becoin face with 9 kickers and stepdowns in total. Out of the gate on top of the face it was the rider’s choice which line to choose and which kicker to hit. At the end overall impression of line, style and jumps was important to the judges.
Four Oakley athletes attended the event and performed incredibly well. Freeskiing hero JP Auclair (Oakley) came over from Canada to fight for the title. Having a brilliant run with a huge backflip at the last jump still was not enough to beat Anthony Bronovski also from Canada. Nevertheless JP was very happy with the 2nd spot on the podium in front of local Richard Permin (FRA; OAKLEY) who probably put together the fasted run of the day. Dropping into the face with a nice 360 followed by a huge cliff down into a couloir Richard skied down fast and only missing a 360 at the bottom made him miss a better spot on the podium. On fouth position and aswell winning the BEST TRICK AWARD with a huge 720 ened up Oakley rookie Bene Mayr (GER; OAKLEY) and earned himself a lot of respect within the freesking scene.
Oakley’s Sven Küenle unfortunately crashed pretty hard after a big cliff but luckily skied out healthy.
All athletes were very positive about the event and we are looking forward to the second edition next winter.
