In just his second competition on the Freeride World Tour, Petersen won the Swatch Freeskiing and Freeride World Tour at Revelstoke, BC in January 2012.
After several years of skiing relatively under the radar, Petersen is back in the spotlight—competing at big mountain freeskiing competitions and filming with Sherpas Cinemas and Teton Gravity Research. His segment in Sherpa’s All.I.Can is being touted as one of the best film segments of the year.
He appeared in Oakley’s 2011 film The Ordinary Skier after spending a month in Chamonix skiing with Seth Morrison. It wasn’t his first time to the Mecca of ski mountaineering.
At only 21 years of age, he skis consequential lines with the confidence of someone twice his age. He also has a wisdom that only someone who has survived both big-mountain objectives and the pressure of the ski industry’s expectations.
Being the son of legendary skier Trevor Petersen (tragically killed in a 1996 avalanche in Chamonix, France) may have helped usher Petersen into the industry at an early age, but Kye has earned every ounce of respect that his achievements elicit.
Petersen is a true mountain man. Steep, extreme lines are where he excels and he loves nothing more than an epic adventure. Whether it’s ski mountaineering in the Alps, snowmobile skiing near his hometown of Whistler or throwing perfect tricks off massive backcountry features, Petersen can do it all.
