Curren Caples may be a newcomer to just having his driver’s license, but the young guy’s capabilities reach far beyond his age. The Ventura, Calif. native has been the talk of the town for the last few years, since making his X Games debut in 2010, and even more so now that he made the jump to the pro ranks at the 2013 Tampa Pro. At the 2010 X Games, Curren became the first male competitor to be born after the yearly event’s (now multi-yearly) debut in 1995 and was the youngest athlete competing that year on the pro level, despite still being an amateur.     Based on the surfer/skater combo, the style and the long blonde hair, the comparisons have already been made to the legendary Z-Boy, Jay Adams. He’s on the level to be traveling and skating with the likes of Eric Koston, Rune Glifberg and Ryan Sheckler. And now he has a win at the legendary amateur contest, the Volcom Damn AM. Maybe it’s time to state the obvious: Curren Caples is ready for the spotlight. In due time. His time as a pro is sure to come sooner rather than later, but for now, let’s embrace the moment.

    The recent announcement that X Games is partnering with Street League was huge news for competitive skateboarding. More exposure for the sport and the biggest name skateboarders in the world. There’s another partnership happening in skateboarding that also has the best intentions for the future of the sport in mind, but it’s happening without the media attention or big-money contracts or major venues – it’s happening in small, local skate parks around the world. Oakley is working with Element on its “Make It Count” International Skate Contest Series.

    Watching Eric Koston do what he does on a skateboard is just such a rewarding experience. Doesn’t matter if he’s in Barcelona or Copenhagen or Paris or Foothill Ranch, Calif, the guy is poetry on wheels. Jackson Pollock with darker skin. Which is why whatever video or webisode series or school play Koston takes part in while riding a skateboard or just being funny-guy Koston, we’ll watch.
