Bob Burnquist

Skate

Bob Burnquist starting skating in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the age of 11, before the sport consumed the country and the world. By 14, he had turned pro. In 1995 he showed up, entered and won the Slam City Jam in 1995 and has been wowing crowds with his skating ever since. Capable in all disciplines, Bob has set himself apart primarily in Vert and MegaRamp – which could be due in part to the fact that he has a private half-pipe and MegaRamp at his home, which he calls “Dreamland,” in Southern California. Eric Koston. Rune Glifberg. Ryan Sheckler. Curren Caples. Oakley sent this lethal foursome to Australia with legendary skateboarder/photographer Arto Saari and what resulted was an amazing multimedia story on the trials and tribulations that come with being any one of these heralded skaters out on the road. Incorporating videos, a gallery of Arto’s best images and a narrative of the weeks-long trip, we get a sense for this unique melding of talents, both in front of and behind the lens. Life on the Ramblas is never-ending; the clubs in the city seem to never close; the architectural wonders, the sight-seeing opportunities, the various means of entertainment are limitless. That cocktail of elements made the city the perfect first European host for an event that seems to consume every bit of energy that can be packed into a four-day window: Summer X Games.

On a breezy afternoon at the Etnies Skatepark in Mission Viejo, Calif., Ryan Sheckler was joined by the skating community. Current pros like Greg Lutzka and Austen Seaholm, legends of the sport like Jay Adams and Christian Hosoi, turned out for the cause. They were there to compete, of course, but they were also there to contribute – and contribute, they did. Between the carnival atmosphere outside the park and the money spent to watch the big name present and past pros do their thing, more than $100,000 was raised for the Sheckler Foundation and “Be The Change” project to build a skatepark on the Port Gamble S’klallam Reservation.
