Bio

Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins was born in San Diego and raised in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, although spent part of her childhood growing up in Sayulita, Mexico, just outside Puerto Vallarta. Her legal name is Lyndsey, and Adams is her middle name. She started using the nickname Lyn-z in the 4th grade. Hawkins was very athletic and started surfing at the age of six. She also participated in a variety of sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, and gymnastics. Lyn-Z got into skateboarding after her brother, Tyler, bought her a membership at the Encinitas YMCA when she was six years old. Hawkins’ often uses her artistic talents to customize the griptape on her skateboards. Many bear the letters RIP, in memory of her late father, who passed away in December 2003.

Hawkins is at the forefront of a very small group of professional female skaters. She is also one of a few skaters to skate the DC Mega Ramp, and the first female skater to do so.

Due to a broken arm in 2005 and a torn ACL (resulting in surgery) in 2006, Lyn-Z has missed out on many competitions. In lieu of participating, she was the on-camera host for the girls competition at the West 49 Canadian Open in Hamilton, Ontario in September 2006.

In 2007 Hawkins returned to competition, and won the gold medal in the Women’s Vert competition at X Games 13 in Los Angeles.

In 2008 Hawkins appeared on the cover of Concrete Wave Magazine’s annual Skateboard Directory.

Q&A

  • How do you see yourself? Are you rebellious? Quiet? Weird? Why? I keep to myself in a shy way but am very outgoing when I want to be, ticklish, giggly, and loud at times, I gives hugs not handshakes and am not too rebellious because I have a super guilty conscious.
  • What are the things that inspire you? The ocean, sunsets, snow storms, smiling faces, laughter, landing something new, encouragement, the little things that put a smile on my face.
  • What is the greatest lesson you have ever learned? There is a silver lining in every situation or even person, if you are unable to find it, change the way you are looking.
  • What is the greatest thing you have taught somebody else? How to look at life though a completely different set of eyes, in ways they never imagined, to help them be more of what they are capable of being.
  • What are the greatest hurdles you have had to overcome in life? My dad died the day after Christmas when I was 14. My dad was my biggest fan in everything I did. He was a huge part of my skating even though he didn’t know the names of tricks or anything he would sit and watch me for hours on end cheering me on. He took me to as many contests as he could, now he lives on in my heart and is with me at all times, he looks down on me and I know he is still my biggest fan! I also blew out my knee when I was 16 and that put me out for 8 months, although it was tough it really taught me a lot and opened my eyes to a new world.
  • What are the 3 biggest things you learned from your parents? How to love… dream big, then fallow those dreams because we will support you along the way… be grateful for what you have but strive for what you dream to have.
  • Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My mom, I have never met a stronger more loving person in my life, she has and always will be there for me, she has taught me way more then I could imagine and I am still learning from her everyday.
  • What are you passionate about and why? I'm passionate about life because you only have one and if you don’t live it with passion what are you living for… I’m passionate about the things I do in my life because they are what make up my life.
