$100k Raised by Ryan Sheckler's Foundation at "Skate For a Cause"

On a breezy afternoon at the Etnies Skatepark in Mission Viejo, Calif., Ryan Sheckler was joined by the skating community. Current pros like Greg Lutzka and Austen Seaholm, legends of the sport like Jay Adams and Christian Hosoi, turned out for the cause. They were there to compete, of course, but they were also there to contribute – and contribute, they did. Between the carnival atmosphere outside the park and the money spent to watch the big name present and past pros do their thing, more than $100,000 was raised for the Sheckler Foundation and “Be The Change” project to build a skatepark on the Port Gamble S’klallam Reservation.

Based on the surfer/skater combo, the style and the long blonde hair, the comparisons have already been made to the legendary Z-Boy, Jay Adams. He’s on the level to be traveling and skating with the likes of Eric Koston, Rune Glifberg and Ryan Sheckler. And now he has a win at the legendary amateur contest, the Volcom Damn AM. Maybe it’s time to state the obvious: Curren Caples is ready for the spotlight.

In due time. His time as a pro is sure to come sooner rather than later, but for now, let’s embrace the moment.

The recent announcement that X Games is partnering with Street League was huge news for competitive skateboarding. More exposure for the sport and the biggest name skateboarders in the world.

There’s another partnership happening in skateboarding that also has the best intentions for the future of the sport in mind, but it’s happening without the media attention or big-money contracts or major venues – it’s happening in small, local skate parks around the world. Oakley is working with Element on its “Make It Count” International Skate Contest Series.

Up until the beginning of Skate Streetstyle, Dew Tour Toyota City Championships in San Francisco hadn’t been treating Ryan Sheckler well. The newest discipline at Dew Tour, however, seemed to awaken Sheckler’s competitive fervor.

On his first of four runs, with the Bay Bridge as a backdrop, Sheckler set the standard very high – too high, in fact, with a score of 90.25 – and the rest of the skaters were left chasing.

BOWL-A-RAMA has come a long way. Back in 2005 in Bondi, Australia, it was a small gathering of talented skaters who were putting on a demo. In order to turn the gathering into something more, someone made a run by an ATM and pulled out what would be the event’s cash prize. The event was born.

This Thursday, October 6, after numerous stops over the years in Australia and New Zealand, BOWL-A-RAMA will make its first appearance in New York City, taking place at the Chelsea Pier Bowl. Thousands of spectators are expected to come out to see the finest bowl skaters from around the world fight for a chunk of the $50,000 purse.

Competing in front of a passionate crowd in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bob Burnquist did what Bob Burnquist does in MegaRamp – he went big, was smooth in his execution and won another title.

On Sunday, his winning run on the 65 was a switch backside 180 to Indy 540 – while launching nearly 21 feet into the air.

For Ryan Sheckler, it’s always good to share the podium with the homies.

And although Oakley’s Superstar didn’t pick up the X Games Skateboard Street Gold this year, he at least took second behind one worthy champ: P-Rod.

“I was just happy to land my run,” Ryan said, rocking his Oakley eyewear. “It just worked out. I really wanted to land that back 3 and I got that, so I’m stoked,” Sheckler said. “I’m very excited to be up here. I haven’t had a podium finish in a minute, so I’m stoked.”
