Bradley Wiggins Triumphs At Six-Day Tour Of Romandie
Oakley cyclist Bradley Wiggins has put in too much hard work over the past winter to let a small mechanical problem ruin his performance at the Tour of Romandie. Wiggins overcame an issue with his bike chain at the beginning of the climb at Crans-Montana to ride to the overall victory. Beginning the day nine seconds behind Spanish leader Luis Leon, Wiggins was aided by his Team Sky teammates, led by world champion Mark Cavendish. Finishing Sunday’s final 10.25 mile circuit stage in a time of 28 minutes, 56 seconds, Wiggins was able to secure the overall tour title with a combined time of 18 hours, 5 minutes, 40 seconds.
“It was a true test of a rider,” Wiggins said of his Tour of Romandie experience, including his early mechanical mishap. ”It had a bit of everything in it plus a mechanical problem. I’m pleased with the way I handled that moment because a few years ago I might have thrown my toys out of the pram and chucked my bike down the ravine!”
Wiggins’ Tour of Romandie win compliments his Paris-Nice stage race victory earlier in the year and strongly increases his status as a serious 2012 Tour de France favorite. Team Sky, who won the team event, played a huge part in Wiggins’ Tour of Romandie win.
“People don’t see it but it’s becoming a well-oiled machine both on the road and off the road,” the three time Olympic gold medalist Wiggins said of his team. “That’s very pleasing and people are really starting to establish themselves in their roles. You know you’re in a great team when you’ve got the world champion (Mark Cavendish) riding for you on the front.”
Congratulations to Bradley for his monumental win. Keep that streak alive!
