Olympic Champion Samuel Sanchez Claims Tour of Basque Country Victory

Spaniard Samuel Sanchez overtook fellow Oakley cycling teammate Joaquin Rodriguez to secure the overall Tour of Basque Country title on his home turf. Sanchez, coming off a huge 3rd stage, 102 mile win a few days prior, overtook a nine second deficit on the final day to claim the overall first place spot.

The final day of the Tour of Basque Country was a quick 11.7-mile time trial around the medieval village of Onati. The weather was not ideal, but Sanchez, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the Men’s Road Race, fought through the rain to post the fastest time on the final stage, ultimately earning him the tour win. Rodriguez finished the final stage in sixth place, 21 seconds behind Sanchez’s top mark. His sixth place finish dropped him to second place in the overall standings, completing the tour twelve seconds behind Sanchez. Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands rounded out the top three.

With his 2012 Tour of Basque Country victory, the 34-year-old Sanchez topped his previous third place finishes in 2007 and 2009. Congratulations to Samuel on his big win! Keep pedaling hard!
