GreenEDGE: Oakley Cyclist Simon Gerrans Dominates Tour Down Under for Team's Innaugural Victory
Team GreenEDGE is officially on the map.
Oakley Cyclist Simon Gerrans powered the Australian cycling team to its most prominent victory by claiming the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under in his phenomenal debut.
“It’s just fantastic,” Simon said, rocking his Oakley performance eyewear. “I really can’t thank my teammates at GreenEdge enough. It’s such a fantastic victory and we couldn’t ask for a more perfect way to start the season.”
The final stage was raced over 20 laps of a street circuit at Elder Park, Adelaide CBD. The 90 kilometre finale set off with the air temperature at a whopping 37 degrees. And the thermometers on the riders bikes were reading 52.
Although the 31 year old went into the stage tied on time with Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), he actually started as race leader due to an overall lower total. There were a handful that were hoping to challenge Simon during the final stage, but GreenEDGE were up to the challenge and vigilant throughout, making sure every move was covered.
“I had Robbie McEwen looking after me (and) that was pretty special since it was his last race in Australia,” he said of his team mate McEwen, who holds the record for the most stage wins in the history of the Santos Tour Down Under, 12.
“We had a tough task today to control Alejandro Valverde who is a classics rider. The last lap was very fast. It’s an even sweeter victory than my first one here in 2006. It gives me the opportunity to thank for the first time the Ryan family (GreenEDGE team owners Gerry and Andrew) and Shayne Bannan (GreenEDGE General Manager) for putting this team together. It couldn’t be a better start for us.”
The victory came on the heels of a huge success at the national road championship in Ballarat.
“I made it a target to win the national championship and the Tour Down Under. I’ve ticked those boxes, so it is a real dream start.”
