Andy Schleck Collects White Jersey After Stage 15
Astana’s Alberto Contador won the day and the maillot jaune on Sunday, riding away from a small group of favorites on the final climb in stage 15 of the Tour de France.
Oakley’s Andy Schleck of the Saxo Bank team was the only rider able to stay close to Contador in the final ascent to the Swiss ski resort of Verbier in Sunday’s 15th stage. He collected the white jersey for the best young rider in the process.
While all other Tour contenders lost more than a minute, the 24-year-old Schleck conceded 43 seconds to the new yellow jersey rider and climbed to fifth overall.
Andy Schleck wants to isolate Tour de France leader Alberto Contador from his teammates in the two remaining Alpine stages to beat the Spaniard in Paris next Sunday.
“I was impressed by Contador, I wasn’t expecting him being so strong,” Schleck said Monday. “Now we are ready to take all the risks in the third week. We can isolate them. The ideal scenario would be to find myself with Contador and (brother) Frank in the finale of the Grand Bornand stage.”
